    tuning a 2.6 cyl Series 3

OK, semi-random question, but maybe some can help.

My plan this weekend is to get the old 2.6 firing. It has not run in 9 years, but is theoretically in good shape. Once I reattach the carby, oil cooler lines, air cleaner, fan belts etc it should be right (no major work needed).

However, at this point the dizzy is pretty much hanging off.

So my question is, are there any tricks to getting the timing right (without a timing gun) from this stage of engine re-build.

There is a big chance the starter motor, electrics or fuel pump dose not work, but assuming they all come to the party can I twist, tighten or hammer something in particular to get the ball rolling.

Maybe an old trick, or just a starting point to get it going.

Perhaps a carby trick or something.

Failing that, I'll just tighten the dizzy and corss my fingers that it fires

I guess i need to know the firing sequence? anyone??

    cheers and thanks in advance
    Jim

get pot 1 on top dead center.

check its valves if they are not both free turn the crank 360 degrees and they should be...

insert the dizzy with the cap off. that gives you the position of number 1;s firing.

crank the engine over 2 full turns and line up the timing mark for the predetermined firing position (8-12 deg BTDC will work if you cant find the marks)

move the dizzy round till the points open. double check the line up of the #1 pot

now cap the dizzy and thats the static spark timing done.

for the fuel if it hasnt gone in a while feed it about a 10:1 ratio of petrol and metho, prime it and give the barrel a squirt of start ya bastard OR brake cleaner. If you know the carbies a good one skip that, and just prime it with fresh fuel , give it 2 taps of the loud pedal and crank it.

    best of luck

Awesome, thanks for that. To be honest, I recon I'm out of my depth so will cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Do you have to remove the head to check the valves? I'm feeling this is a dumb question.....

    cheers jim

No, just the rocker covers. I suggest that a workshop manual would be a very good investment! Maybe someone on here local to you could give you a hand?
