    S3 SWB Rebuild

    hi,

started a s3 swb rebuild stripped down to chassis with motor and gbox in still. Q1. cleaning up chassis was wondering whether to paint the chassis black or go for that galvanised look (cant afford gal). there is a paint you can spray or brush on that is supposed to be like gal. any experience anyone on this. Want a cheaper alternative to hot dipping.

Q2. gearbox crossmember removal - has a normal s3 gbox and holden 186 motor retaining this but should i cut up the chassis and remove the crossmember below gbox for future ease of removal of box or leave in situ. could you do away altogether and weld gbox mounts to chassis sides?

Q3. wiring for rear - how many coloured wires should i run for the rear as replacement wires for the old. has standard lights at rear may in future want to add another spotty in rear but not sure of how many wires to run. thx

Ok, the chassis you gould go the cold galv spray, but unless you are by the beach a few coats of paint shouold be enough.

Q2 I think it's illegal to remove crossmembers from a vehicle's chassis, or to replace one with a removable one. I know the army series 3's were modified to have a removable gearbox member.

Q3, there is a wiring diagram in the files section of AULRO, that will give you a good place to start. Fresh looms are available from vinwire, but they do cost a bit. However the quality is very good.
