Where do you get hold of the special socket Part#RO1010,so you can torque up the front hub castleated locking ring onto half shaft? Or do you have to resort to special hammer and punch tool. .......Pat

Do you mean the two inch box spanner to set the preload on the bearings, or the ~1 inch socket to do up the castleated nut that holds the axle in the drive flange?
Aaron.
the round castelated nut. I just use a pair of multigrips![]()

The castleated locking ring that holds the axle in drive flange. Mine is not a hex nut .....Pat
Every one that I have seen is a hex nut. Unless somebody can tell me that a SIII Land Rover is different to every other vehicle that I have ever worked on.
Aaron.
All Series 3 109 (except Stage 1) and 88 from July 1980 used a round slotted nut instead of a castellated nut. It is not clear in the parts book, but I think that it coincides with the adoption of 24 spline common drive flanges to match the salisbury on the rear of 109s and adopted for commonality on the 88 in 1980.

Hi Aaron, the nut is 100% round. I have a late edition series 3 w-shop manual, where it is listed " RO 1010 spanner front hub nut 109 Models" .The 1971 edition series 3 manual that I also have has no listing and shows a hex nut. I have fitted a fine spline 6 cyl front axle assy to get the larger front brakes, so I guess it came with that as standard which is a pain in the a..e, after all we are talking Land Rover......Pat
I too have only seen the hex nut, but then I haven't worked on many SIII 88's
Rather than spend $35 on one special tool, pick up a complete LWB axle for the same price. You will get better brakes AND the improved (industry standard) circlip system to replace the castellated nut.
