    Series 3 Chassis

I am looking to buy a S3 SWB. I recently looked at a vehicle but it seemed to have a few chassis repairs. Can anyone assist by posting a pic of a sound and unrepaired S3 SWB chassis (from the underside)?

    Many thanks.
    Gordon.

Hi I just posted a couple of photos on my thread to deal with some minor points to my S3 I am restoring. If you would like the whole chassis or a particular aspect let me know I can take the tub off as it is just sitting on there. It is a diesel SWB so there maybre some minor differences to a petrol version. I will try and down load a photo for you.
    kindest regards
    Garry

    Hi Garry,
I have previously admired your pics. You don't have any pics of the underside of the chassis? Does the SWB have the same basic rail design as the LWB. I have looked at a few of those and there is a seem running down the middle (longitudinally). The SWB I recently looked seemed to have flat sections welded on the underside so there was no seem. It is otherwise a very nice original Landy.
    Thanks again.
    Gordon.

Gordon, attached photo of my 76 Ser3 SWB. As far as I'm aware it's flat along the bottom side being constructed of four plates welded along the corners of the box section. Later models (defenders I think) had the seam along the centre.

Second photo is area of rust rear corner of chassis where the rails meet back cross member. Look for rust here where chassis plates overlap rear cross member plates. There may be some plugs externally at rear of join area that you might be able to remove to look inside.

    Cheers

Only long wheelbase Series 3s have the seams top and bottom. I don't know about 90s and later, but all Series 3 swbs are built from four plates, just like 2a's.

Thanks all for your replies. I think I missed a good S3 as I was uncertain about the chassis. I guess I'm better informed for the next opportunity.

    Cheers,
    Gordon.

Hey Garry, what tyres are you running on your S3? They look similar to some goodyears I am trying to track down. I'm in the market for some tyres for my S2A, but want to have the older looking tread styles similar to yours.

    Thanks, Nathan
