Radiator cap and expansion tank 2.6L

    Hi all,
does the 2.6L in a Series 3 usually have an expansion/overflow tank and does anyone know the correct radiator cap pressure for these engines. The system seems to be spitting some coolant out and it's making a mess. I hope I don't have a head gasket problem.

I think so the part no is 564718 for the overflow bottle and rtc3610 for the cap (9lb)

I jsut had this drama. Yes, an overflow bottle should be there, and if you put the hoses on the wrong way around it will dribble out coolant quite often.

Did you mount the expansion tank on the passenger side of radiator. This is where it is located on my 2a but the outlet from radiator on the s3 points in wrong direction. But I can't see where else it could be mounted.

it's on the passanger side in my series 3. I think that is where they all are. the radiator isn't in backwards is it.

On second thougths, that's a silly suggesion, the hoses wouldn't go on properly.

It's on the passenger side on my Series III too. Funnily enough, had drama with the SIII overheating & spitting water everywhere after we went away last weekend. First time it's ever done it. After going up a really steep hill, didn't like it at all. It was apparently caused by a dodgy radiator cap.

Sounds like it could be a good idea to carry a spare cap, something I hadn't thought about before. How was the cap tested and did you use a genuine or aftermarket?

I was wrong Pete. It was initially thought to be the radiator cap, as the water was spitting & leaking out from the cap ... but the consensus now is that it was caused by the thermostat sticking. That's been replaced, so hopefully it'll be okay now.

I don't think it is. In saying that I've only just bought the vehicle and it's my first s3. There is no fan cowling either which could be another sign it's an aftermarket radiator.
