That would be VIN (otherwise it would read Vehicle Identification Number Number)

Plug your VIN or Chassis number into Classic Land Rovers and read the suffix letter to give you the date range of that suffix.

However all series 3 should have an Australian "Compliance Plate" which informs you of the year of manufacture.

Correct me - if I am wrong but the date on the compliance plate is the date that the plate is affixed to the vehicle.

My first Disco was made in Oct 93 but had a Jan 94 compliance plate, the second one was made in Jan 94 but had a May 94 compliance plate.

There was an issue a number of years ago where Jeeps sat out out in a paddock for a couple of years before being sold - the date on the compliance plate was the date the fixed and was then used as evidence that the car was a later year that it actually was.

I don't believe that your comment applies to Series 3's built in Australia, particularly in the suffix a SIII. It was only much later when vehicles were being imported and not sold (like the Jeep) that someone realised they could delay affixing the plate.

thanks that site did help somewhat but still came up with model year 1972- 79 the model is 903 suffix letter A 1. Revision of this model. this is what i no chassis No 90305380A Can you make it out.

As Diana highlighted - what does the compliance plate say - it will give you the year and month (within a month or two).

If it does not have a compliance plate - that may cause you issues if the vehicle was Australian made - less so if it was a private import but you may need some documentation.

OK so in the SIII there is no dates for the suffix - what I can tell you is in the last year of the Grenville Motors NSW Allocations books they recorded the Series III. The first 88 listed is 90300295A and was dispatched 21-4-1972
the last petrol 88 in the book is 90302892A dispatched 14-9-1973.

Therefore in 17 months the Enfield factory and others produced about 1,600 88" petrols, so 100 per month.

Your 5380 is 2488 numbers after the last one in the Grenville books so add 25 months to September 1973 and you have a guestimate for the production of your vehicle as October 1975.

we have two plates in cab on the fire wall with serial No,s and the like plate 1 has the body No and serial No done in Sydney. plate 2 says land rover 88 made in England with the chassis No and vin being the same, i cannot find any other plates other than the 4wd instructions plate
