my manual shows them as being a permanantly mounted pin but I have seen repaired ones where the pin is actually a bolt and it threads into a captive nut.
Hi all,
a quick question.
When you unbolt the door tops (window section) from the door itself can you remove the bolts from the window frame section? are they threaded in or welded?
Reason for asking is that I have some rusty door tops I want to replace with good ones, but the good ones snapped off during removal and now have nothing for the nut to go on. I don;t want to go yanking at parts if I know they were never meant to be separated.
cheers
Jim

They are a permanently welded bolt into the 2 levels of the window frame.
Your only option is to find another door top frame (about $120 for reproductions) or weld on a new threaded section. You can not use a sleeve in the location because it is a close fit through the tube in the door bottom.
The best way is to find bolt of the correct thread/size cut off the head at an appropriate length, file a large chamfer around the cut edge and similar on the stump of the original post and weld them together.
Be very careful to make them in a straight alignment and then file down the weld above the diameter of the shaft.
Protect the repair with a rust preventative and apply liberal amounts of grease on the posts when you re-fit the doortop. (That way it will come off easily next time.)
If you do the welding repair with the glass in situ, be very careful to keep the stump of the post and the bottom of the frame cool as the top of the post is probably in direct contact with the glass and the heat may crack the glass at that point.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
I've just replaced mine for $99 each from roverparts if you end up needing new door tops. They appear to be a good build and are primed grey. All you get is the frame though, no seals or window catch.
