The hydraulic was actually the first drum winch to be offered as an approved optional part on Land Rover. You will find them listed in the rear of Series 2 and early S2a workshop manuals from about 1963.
There were a few in Oz but they were frightfully expensive in comparison to the S.U.E. and other PTO (shaft driven) drum winches, with the Thomas PTO winch about half the price of the hydraulic winch in SIII. They were quite a lot more common on UK market vehicles, particularly the 1 Ton models used by the various electricity boards.
The Mk2 as you guess is the second version, the Mk 1 was only marked Land Rover.
The hydraulic winch has the advantage of not breaking shear pins etc as they use a pressure relief for the same purpose.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
