Spoke to Albert yesterday morning and the tappets were responsible for the "backfire" as suspected. Very strange, as the previous owner is the son of a mechanic and he and his father had done lots of work on it. It seems as though he had overtightened a tappet to the point where the valve wouldn't close properly. How could you not notice that!?!?!?!??

The brakes needed a LOT of adjustment. Odd also, for the same reason as already mentioned.

Anyway, I should get it back by Tuesday and I'll post some photos when I do.

An overtightened tappet, a good shared learning, I did not know that could cause a backfire.

    Backfire

TJ, I don't think it was a backfire - I think it was simply correct firing, with the correct timing, occurring whilst a valve was slightly open. The symptom is similar - a popping noise, flames from the barrel of the carby, rough running (essentially missing on one cylinder).

Of course, the experience for us was more complex, because we began with bad ignition timing (and therefore backfiring) and adjusted it and vastly improved it but could not get rid of the symptoms completely because there were two distinct issues - the ignition timing, which we fixed, and the valve not closing, which we didn't diagnose.

Anyway, a lesson in cautious trouble-shooting and not assuming anything.

Also, door rubbers all 'round - including the rear tailgate and top door which sits above the tailgate, and the sealing rubbers which sit between the doors and the door tops, and between the ute body and the wagon sides and likewise the roof ones, and finally the air vents under the windscreen.

Heck, it feels expensive merely writing them all out!

    Cheers,

If you haven't found some bailey channel you can get from Scott's old auto rubber on 0395633023

OK, picked up the car yesterday and mostly good, but...

Can't find second gear - just grinds where the gate should be, and it pops out of fourth occasionally. I supopose we're pulling it out next and rebuilding it. !!!!

Any diagnostic info would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it has play on the mainshaft, the bushing for second will be worn out too and there is a special spring loaded cog for second that may be stuffed. Talk to Sean at www.roverparts.com.au and he'll send you exactly what you need just by telling him the symptons. His advice was spot on for me, my box is now working 100%, no crunching or popping out. While you've got it out you should seriously consider replacing the transfer case bearings and getting a high ratio transfer case. I got mine from the UK for $780 INCLUDING freight! I went to buy one from Roverparts and was told it was cheaper and just as quick to get one from the UK. When you ring up a business and they send you somewhere else cheaper for something they can supply you know they are looking after you!

Thanks TJ. The ever-reliable Wozapinin has a rebuilt gearbox there which he's selling me to save me the work and stress of opening mine up.

Hopefully I can get out there tomorrow to pick it up.
