    Time...

OK, to all those who have asked, or wondered without asking...

No, I haven't had time to touch it. We drove to Sydney in December, and back in Jan. (in the Toyota Hiace Commuter towing an ally enclosed trailer). Brilliant trip, saw some landies, including a Game at the servo at Merredin nearly opposite the military museum (those are some BIG guns!) which we took photos of and chatted with the owner... he has seven Landies...

Will post a progress report on the Landy when we get back to the gearbox. Really, really, procrastinating on that one. Sigh.

If anybody needs to fill in a Saturday and has lost their sanity, email me and offer to help.

Will post some trip photos at some point too. Wouldn't want anybody not to believe we did the trip.

    Cheers,
    Lane.

Talking Fun in the bush at last...

Well, I don't know what happened, but we decided that despite not having second gear or a reliable fourth gear we'd take the old girl out into the bush and give her a bit of a run. I think I was looking for inspiration to motivate us to put in the work to exchange gearboxes...

And remarkably, as we drove off on our adventure, I tried second gear by instinct and found it! So we have second gear. I kept expecting it to disppear again and on one occasion it seemed to do so for a period but then reappeared and remained available all afternoon as we thrashed around the tracks in the hills. Weirdest thing I've ever experienced in a vehicle! I'm wondering if it was ignorance of the exact location of the gate all along, except that I tried every conceivable position around where it is and once we found it we didn't seem to have any trouble with it apart from that one brief period... Who knows. Anybody seen this before?

    Anyway, happy, happy landy drivers!

    Game

And the Game we saw in Merredin, as well as some shots of the military museum from outside.

Thanks Jason. I was impressed with the ride and handling also. Steering is pretty vague, which I assume is normal, however we'll check the toe-in and see if that helps, but the suspension works admirably. Suspension travel is excellent - is that what people refer to as "flex"? The ride, especially considering the severity of the bumps and the primitive seating, was amazing. Looking forward to trying some more difficult ground soon, and winter will add some good challenges.

Steering should not be "pretty vague", although to some extent this depends on what you are used to. Vague steering will be due to lost motion somewhere, tyre pressures, or very possibly, alignment.

Things to check - tie rod ends, steering box free play, pitman arm loose, steering box mounts loose or flexing, steering relay moving in chassis, free play in relay or either steering arm on relay loose on splines, swivel bearings, arm on swivel loose, wheel bearings, U-bolts, shackle bushes, shackle bolts, broken spring leaves.

Peugeots, generally, which have the most precise steering of any car outside Ferraris and the like.

I find Commodore steering vague - frighteningly so! But yes, this seems worse than it should be. I think it's alignment, because everything is tight. Thanks for the detailed check-list, much of which I would not have thought of.

I read your thread on power steering conversion and let me tell you my definition of "easy" and yours are poles apart.

I need a wheel spanner for the Landy. Anybody have a spare they don't need? Alternativly, a source for a new one? I tried Malz and they don't have anything large enough.
