So is there no other hub that will fit the landy from another whatsoever . .
The momentum of this project seems to be slowing to a halt.
We have had so many good ideas and now have way too many options we could play with.
I would love to come up with a slick conversion, but I wonder if the market versions are exactly what results from following this line to its end. Slick but expensive.
I am wondering if we were to do the conversion as per the original one from TJWA would we get it passed by an engineer? (I would find a way to not cut the hub ribs off and to have a better drill pattern around the hub studs though)
I think it is a not bad conversion and would be happy to have it on my 109. If I can get 2 or 4 of the laser cut caliper plates I will give it a go and see what the engineer thinks. If all goes well every one else can do the mod and use mine as a reference when it comes to the engineer.
I don't really need disc brakes because I don't drive mine all the time as I ride my motorbike every day rain hail or shine, but I am always interested in design and improvements.
What do you all think?
KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) This is more a reminder to me then inferring any of you are Stupid :)
My ideas and designs often go from great to insanely wonderful but impossible on anything less then a Bill Gates budget.
I was thinking about the hubs lastnight & since no one is sure about one from a another landy..So i was thinking would it be posable to fit a stub axle as well so a differant hub could be used say like from a range rover as they are the same diff as such would the stub axel fit.. Or i wonder what it would cost to have one made instead of remaking a hub could it be posable to do that so as to get a differant hub on.....
I love this thread . . . .
I wish i could do more in the trile & error part but i don't have any parts laying around....
Anything is possible, but the question is how much work and time is it worth?
Different hubs and stubs are maybe possible but then the axles may be the wrong length, or create steering issues.
And then there is is the big issue with cost. To buy other hubs or defender parts etc and the many hours involved would end up making a commercial kit the best way to go.
I have little money to play with and only a little more time then money to dedicate to the job.
As said earlier I am happy to do a remake of the original set up and have a play. I have 6cy and 4cy hubs here and am willing to butcher them for the cause. :)
Not sure if all series front diff housing's are the same but you can use county front cv joints and and stub axle then its all standed but you need to hon out the swivel housing to make it fit ( I know this will work on a stage 1)
Then the rear end is pretty staight forward
I have said before that I have a range rover front axle that I don't mind stripping and maybe meet up with travis and look over the whole thing.
The only problem is that you will need to make spacers for the back diff and fit flares

This could be an avenue. Did the County/110 hub have disc brakes? Or is the hub able to except a disc? I'm going out to a property with 16 Land Rovers on it on the weekend, I'm sure there is a County there I can look at.
Thanks Agro, what is the difference with the Range Rover axle, how can it help? I'm getting a little lost.
Thanks to everyone for keeping this going, things were slowing down, but I'm still confident we will eventually come up with a solution that will meet with engineering approval.
On a side note, I have ordered a set of Hystee Automotive swivel housings that will except Defender vented discs and calipers. I still want to see this thread come to fruition though, I have more than one Series 3 that seems to forever pulll to one side or the other when braking!
Tell me more about these, is this a disc conversion kit or some parts to make your own?

I think from memory the range rover and d1 both had 10spline and the fenders had 24 (like the stage 1)
But if you use the fender axles and the range rover disce brake set up then all good.
But if you still have the series uni front end then it wont work or it might but I think the stub axle on a d1,rr,def is longer by an inch or so.
I was thinking you could just cut down the outer stub axle and then use the rangie brake set up (more around)
If I still had a series axle assembly I could investigate more

They are a redesigned swivel housing and hub that you can fit a Defender vented disc and caliper too. Basically you take off your old swivel housing and replace it with the new one which has tabs molded into it to except the Defender caliper. The website is here Heystee Automotive BV
It is a very similar setup to Timm Coopers design.
