Disc Brake Conversion.

I regards to the hole spacings, if we went with the mounting disc/ring/plate to sandwich the disc to the hub the hole spacing would not matter and any disc replacements in the future would not be a drama.

A while back the issue of wheel spaces came up. It is something that will need addressing as well. Maybe another machined/laser cut plate could be made up to fit, but drill and tap it to take the bolts from the disc mounting. That way it is not just a spacer and may not be considered as such.
If there is a disc that fits over the hub flange I'm sure it would end up so big the rim would not fit. :(

Has the option of hilux calipers been considered? They would be cheaper and if we have strayed from Land Rover parts already a bit more can't hurt ;).

OK a daft question time . But if the disc has to be machined anyway is it posable to machine it (the center hole ) big enough to go over the hub. & if they would do a run with no holes couldn't the disc be machined & drilled to go over the hub & to suit the rover stud pattern , That would make a spacer non relavant . .But you would have to move the calper forward to fit the disc . .

On a disco or defender is the disc behind or in front of the hub , or is it not posable to use a rover disc at all . .

Banjo, thats what i was suggesting on page 6 or 7 (can't remember), the new Landcruisers have massive discs on the back end, which slip over the hub. at a glance they would have the right offset to meet with the calliper spacer ring. they are also five stud, which would make it easier to redrill the rover 5 stud pattern.

This is true also of disco 3 rear disk brakes, but i didn't think they were suitable at the time for some reason.

i've been contemplating this setup for years. its really exciting that everyone is working on this.

you would have to use the Landcruiser rear calliper aswell, as the disc has quite a small swept area, but the diameter of the disk (345mm from memory) would give you the cooling and braking force required.

its size and offset might make it prone to rock damage, however they are robust because they incorporate the rear drum handbrake as well (not needed in this case).

Also, a LandCruiser 200 series weighs 2800kg. at 60/40 weight distribution it would still have 1120kg over the back wheels when cruising. A LWB landy at 1600kg with 60/40 distribution would have 960kg over the front axle when cruising.

Just having a look at other discs.
The ford bronco has a 5 stud with a PCD of 139.7 and has a disc with a 108mm center hole.

This could also get the caliper further away from the swivel hub and the disc more protected by the wheel. It is much more expensive though.

Just out of interest, will a County/110 hub fit onto the series stub axle? I know it would require changing the drive flange, but the 24 splines on county half-shafts are the same as the spline on the 109 SIIIs.

I should have tried the hub over the weekend, but caught a chill while moving stuff about.

Also been following this thread - would love to convert my 101 to front disks but no disks will fit - PCD is too big as is the centre hole. Zeus make a kit but it has flaws and is just too expensive.

In contributing to this thread has anyone found a company that actually makes disks in Aust - all my research has indicated that they are now all made overseas. I was also hoping to get some disks made without stud holes but eventually drew a blank.

Disk Brakes Australia, (DBA) most certainly did make brake rotors in Australia.

Interesting - when I contacted them in the past they said all their rotors were made oversseas but you are correct their website does indicate manufacture here. I just contacted them and they do make rotors but unless they have previously done a custom job on what is required they would not be interested for a production run of less than 100. The guy I spoke too then left the door open by indicating that stud holes are drilled in not cast and that if a production run of a particular model was underway they might consider doing something - mixed messages.

He indicated they do common castings like toyotas every three months but less common models might only happen once every 12 months or longer.

No help for me but for you guys and your series landies, I would identify a common rotor (like the hi-lux), get the model number of the rotor and give Michael at DBA a call and who knows you might be in luck.
