series III dash boards & instrument panels

Anyone got an idea for an alternative to those poxy 70's plastic dashes that were never made for the harsh ozzie sun!

Make your own out of light ally (checkerplate?) sheet? Wouldn't be too difficult if you have access to a bender or a couple of jacks and some bits of decent sized angle iron...

You could take it out and put a Series 2 dash in as others have done, I considered it, but have gone down the rebuild route instead. We've just put carpet on our top dash to combat the sun problem.

I have also made some little brackets out of 20mm angle line to hold the instrument panel to it's box as they ae broken on all our Series 3's.

Are the series 3 dash pads available ? Or do you recover it,if you want to keep the original look.

Id be reluctant to make one out of Alloy it will not be nice in an accident.
As for them being cracked well they are 20-30 years old lol
I filled the cracks with epoxy and then covered it with vinyl looks like new cost $15

    series 3 dash layout

Hi sorry if this is not following original thread but I have just bought a series 3 and am trying to get a diagram of the dash/instrument layout to confirm operation of (the not obvious switches) swithes and buttons. Thanks.

The switches on the right side of the steering wheel are:

Lights: park lights first position, all lights second position.

Instrument lights: First position turns on the instrument dashboard lights.

Heater Fan: First position low, second position high.

Windscreen wiper knob: If you have a two speed wiper you push the knob in for the washer motor and turn it clockwise for two wiping speeds.
If you have a single speed wiper you turn it clockwise once to wipe, and a second time to wash and wipe.

My 3 series 3's all have these switches in different positions and orders!

I have found it best to put the main light switch and the wiper washer switch on the very right to make them easier to get to as they are essential.

Speedo is on the Left with Oil pressure, high beam and cold start? indicators in the bottom of the guage.

Fuel, water temp and charge light are in the instrument dial on the right side.

In one of my other series 3 I made a complete custom dash from mdf and ali checker plate.

The only things I kept from the dash was the speedo and wash/wiper.

    I just wish I took a pic

Some people may no longer be able to read the switch labels on their instrument panel.

All switches should be on the RHS of the panel.
Top row RHS: 1st position off; 2nd position is the illumination for speedo and cluster; 3rd position interior light if fitted.
Top Row LHS: 1st position off; 2nd position side lamps (parking lights). 3rd position headlamps.
Bottom Row RHS: Windscreen wiper washer. Push in = washer. Rotate = wiper; Very late SIII mainly SIII/Stage1 V8 and Isuzu or 4cyl petrol marked 2.3 litre have two speed wipers so the switch has 3 positions Off - Low - Hi. No intermittent and some SIII with single speed wipers have the 3 position switch but not the 2 speed motor.
Bottom Row LHS: Heater demister fan 1st position off; 2nd position low speed; 3rd position Hi speed.

    Hope this helps.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
