    diesel engine blowing smoke

hey i ahve a diesel 2.25l engine that blows smoke i have taking it for a few drives the first one nothing changed, but yesterday went for a longer trip about 100miles took a few hours but noticed it was perrforming better and did get it up to 100km/h on a flat straight road at the end of the trip.but half way through the trip we stopped and left it on idle- no smoke revved it- no smoke.however when we got home it was starting to blow smoke again,my guess is oil rings but besides it blowing smoke everything else is perfect performance wise and other aswell.
so what is your thoughts or experiences with this kind of stuff

The important thing is the colour of the smoke. Blue smoke is oil burning, and is not good, although it may be just valve stem seals. White smoke is steam from water getting into the combustion chamber - very much not good! Black smoke is incomplete combustion, and you will get some in some circumstances with this engine even when in perfect condition. Overfuelling will cause it, as will restricted intake for whatever reason, incorrect injection timing, poor spray pattern, poor compression, incorrect injection timing. How serious it is depends on the circumstances it happens and how bad it is.

you can check the oil rings and stem seals by trying some wynns stop smoke, if that gets it youve got one or the other.

    they're worse when cold.

They blow all sorts of wierd colours when your running them on other than diesel or bio diesel.

G,day, I went through the same prosess to stop my 2.25 diesel smoking.

Mine only smoked on idle too. Blue/ black ish stuff.

1st I tried the wynes stop smoke and injector cleaner...... Little improvement but still smoked

2nd Removed some sound insulation from under the bonnet as it was suffocating the air cleaner.... little less smoke, but found it had more power but still smoked when hot on idle

3rd Got the cylinders pressure tested and the result was perfect as it had an overhall before i bought it 3 years ago. I was told to service the injectors and give it a head job. which included a slight shave to give better compression, full clean up , new valves and valve seals as they were non existant. I was told that some cheap oils can make the rubber perish.
Put back together and was all good for a few hundred kms them slowly got back to the way it was, but heaps more power but still that anoying smoking on idle.

4th. which left fuel pump timing to be looked at . result was it was over fueling and the injector pump needed a service.

Now after 3 years of playing with it it runs like a dream more power and no smoke on idle only a small black puff under hard accelaration. it is a diffrent car to drive now.

I think all up I spent about $2500 on it yes i know its alot for an old car but it should go for another 30 years

    400 for injectors

    400 for head service

    60 for VRS gasket set

40 for oils and stop smoke

    Well worth it
    Cheers Will

Ps if you get the injector pump serviced make sure they adjust it to suit the wear in the pump drive gears not just by the book as their will be some wear and will need to be adjusted to suit. you will need a special tool for this or some diesel guys can do it on feel.

hmm.my dad and grandpa think it is the oil rings, and dad was saying if you replace them you should do the lot while you are going but i was saying the perfomance and everything else is right so it should only need the oil rings.

Hi Brian, I am not really sure as i got the pump rebuilt when i had other work done to the car, such as brakes adjusted, and bled, hand brake rebuilt, recond alternator and new voltage regulator. The bill was $1600 so along with the other stuff I have spent about $2500 on it. I can dig up the invoice and let you know if you like.

    Cheers
