    Alternator upgrade options???

I have a lucas alternator - original fitment to a 1979 2.25D. I think it is somewhere in the 25-40A range??? Looks like the voltage regulator (as a minimum) is fubar, so I might take the opportunity to upgrade, as I will soon be installing a second battery and a winch.

Does anyone know of any bolt-on upgraded alternators for a reasonable price???

Bosch now make a Lucas replacement alternator. It is a modern Bosch alternator, with modern components and modern output ratings, but shaped like a Lucas alternator, with the Lucas mounting spacings. I don't know it's part or model number, and not all dealers know about it, but it does exist. I fitted one to a Bedford in 2005.

Depending whether it is clocked LH or RH, most Bosch alternators with ears usually can be fitted without too much trouble. The most common is the Bosch 85 amp fitted to all Australian cars around 1990. A Magna one fits a RRC V8 with LH clocking( with some mods),and maybe a Falcon one will fit RH mounting. Remember you will have to upgrade the wiring from the alternator to the starter or battery wherever it goes. Regard sPhilip A

Thanks, Great work! However I would like an alternator I don't need to modify, just to make life easier for future replacements. I originally modified a holden alternator when I converted my 2.25P IIA from a generator, however when that died, I made a bracket and fitted an 80A mitsubishi Alternator. I was never perfectly happy though, and when I built the diesel my second engine came with a genuine SIII alternator and bracket, so I fitted that, despite the huge drop in output....

I will measure up the legs and go down to my auto electrician to see what the cattledog says...

I have a holden type which I am fitting to the stage 1 (off a black motor I think) it does not have to be modified to fit, you can try it if you like and see ( i would like it back though)

Thanks - I will let you know. I have Bojan's v8 county in my shed, so will take some measurements off that first.

This may be a bit late, or totally off of the mark, but I fitted a bosch unit from a Ford XF 6 cylinder, (apparently they're different from the XE) to my old Stage 1 V8 with no bracket modification needed but does require a slightly longer slide (or a spacer) on the pivot side. Dead simple. I also fitted an XF unit to my old 200tdi D1 because it was an easy bracket to make and it already had a star point fitted to run the tacho, most of the XF units do according to my auto sparky.

    Cheers,
    Anthony.
