usefull input would be great thanks

Ok we are finaly going to get stuck into doing up our SIII SWB next year and i have a few questions that some people may like to help me on.
This car will be our 4x4 unit as the Disco is getting rediculous for repairs after a trip.

1st: keep the 2.25 and get it rebuilt with a webber fitted and maybe electronic ignition.

2nd: gearbox - is it possible to change the ratios on 3rd and 4th for hwy running.

3rd: move the front nose forward and fit a fender grill to alocate for a engine change, what would be a good change, isuzu diesel, a TDI 200 with 5 speed and tranfer case (if possible) or an other diesel that may go in.

4th: parobolic springs all round with air bags in the rear to compensate for weight in the back and towing when going away for a trip.

any other ideas and suggestions would be appreciated and if they appeal ill fit them in where i can.

i have and will be fitting a bolt locker rear diff

    Thanks
    Mark

    thats a lot of work....
leave the engine fit a zenith
    keep the points
you can get a replacement tcase with taller gears but it changes all gears

if you have to the little 2.8 to 3.3l naturally aspirated suzis work well but a tdi200 with the turbo wound waaaay back or removed is the easiest to fit.

    good idea on the suspension

Hi hope I can help you,

1st: keep the 2.25 and get it rebuilt with a webber fitted and maybe electronic ignition. - I have no idea. I'm a Diesel man.

2nd: gearbox - is it possible to change the ratios on 3rd and 4th for hwy running. You can fit a High Ratio Transfer Case. It raises your high range by 31.8%, but leaves your low range unchanged. I have just fitted one (I'm an Electrician) and can now sit on 110km/h easily. At the moment you can get one from the UK for less than $800 including freight. Ashcroft Transmissions

3rd: move the front nose forward and fit a fender grill to alocate for a engine change, what would be a good change, isuzu diesel, a TDI 200 with 5 speed and tranfer case (if possible) or an other diesel that may go in.
I'm fitting a 200TDi and possibly a LT77 Defender 5 speed box to a SWB S3 with an Ashcroft adaptor to use the original Series transfer case. I have found forum entries from people in the UK who claim to have done it without having to move the radiator panel by moving the engine forward 100mm, having a different radiator fitted and getting rid of the internal bonnet catch for external ones.

4th: parobolic springs all round with air bags in the rear to compensate for weight in the back and towing when going away for a trip.
I have fitted parabolics all round and shockies to match.... can't wait to actually use them. On the airbags I have no idea.

i have and will be fitting a bolt locker rear diff - you lucky bugger, wish I had one.

My series 3 rad has been moved forward so that a stupidly big oil cooler could sit between it and the engine. External catches are used for the bonnet.

I suggest a 200tdi, or similar, with a Roverdrive overdrive unit. From what I have read there is enough oomph to run the overdrive, without the need and hassle of changing the transfer gears.

I love your idea for the suspension

PS Post your results when you do them

Gday Dave, i have put a new Zenith on the old girl aswell as all new gaskets on the manifolds and can not get it to run rite, when its cold its a real bitch untill i travel a k or so then it doesnt flat spot and carry on, a bloke cameinto work with a lightweight and he brought it out from HongKong with him a few years go and it has a weber on it, he gets 160mile to a tank, iam very lucky to get 100 on a very good run.

I would like to keep the 2.25 realy, it is a nice motor ut for when we want to go away camping for a weekend it would take so muh longer to get where we are ing this is why i want to do something and his changing the high range ratios is soundig very nice.

Anothr fellow comes into work with a SWB SIII and it has pabolics in it and only has to pu a few things in the back his trailer on and the nose is pointing to the skyso the air bags to me would completely solve the problem

Oh wow, would love to see a photo of what's under the bonnet if possible? Would be good to see how the radiator and intercooler are mounted.

Here is the overdrive link Mark Roverdrive Gear Corporation - Home

I was thinking about your case whilst driving to Perth yesterday and wondering if you really wanted to change the engine, and it got me thinking about a chap in a magazine who put an Eaton supercharger on his 2 1/4 litre petrol. This gave the oomph and I am pretty sure he used an overdrive as well. The Rover engine would lend itself well to a blower and running on LPG. Eaton M45? blowers come up on ebay quite frequently, as Mini drivers have theirs' upgraded to a bigger blower; the ones I saw were quite cheap but the overdrive is not

    Cheers Charlie

The Zenith will need the choke for a few minutes from cold, even in warm weather. Are you certain that you are getting a proper seal both between the top cover and body of the carburetter and on the O-ring. There is a tendency for the top cover to warp, but this can be fixed by lapping it flat, and if necessary (unlikely) the mating surface on the body can also be lapped flat. Also, make sure that the screws holding the emulsion block onto the top cover are not hitting the body when you tighten the top - grind or turn a little off them if necessary - it will result from using no-standard screws or washers.

The other thing to check is wear on the throttle shaft and the hole it goes through. The shaft can be replaced, and the body bushed.

You might also check for a problem I thought was carburetter - but turned out to be HT leads.
