Just checking if anyone might have an idea why my series 3 4wd does not work. Hubs are engaged, yellow knob depressed but only rear wheels spinning under engine power. Is this normally a big internal gearbox/transfer case prob or are there some simple checks that can be done without going in deep. Thanks![]()

hi. Yes all shafts are fitted. Is what you describe a common fault
would it be a big job to inspect/fix??
Do the easy stuff 1st! Check that the FWH are actually engaging, I had an AVM hub that didn't and it fooled me for a while, is the front propshaft turning? Did anything go bang or clunk when the drive stopped? Its easier to check than to dive in and pull things apart looking for the problem.

Also try just putting it in low range. Does the same as pushing down the yellow lever as far as engaging the front axle goes. That would test if the yellow lever mechanism has disconnected or something like that. It may just not be engaging properly when you push it down.

Also, if you are sure you can do this safely, jack up one wheel on each axle using a trolley jack each - on a flat surface. start the engine, engage 1st low, and let the clutch out carefully. The raised wheel on each axle should now turn slowly. Get someone to watch from a safe distance to see if the front wheel is turning, or if not, if the propshaft is turning. If the front prop turns, the t-case is OK, and the problem must be in the front axle.
OK...managed to jack up the wheels on the drivers side. Drove in first gear (4wd activated) . Back wheel spins, prop shaft spins, front wheel spinning very slowly. Unfortunately i was able to stop the front wheel turning with my foot. Soooo....what does this mean ?????????
Assuming the front prop shaft was turning at the same speed as the rear one, probably a non-functioning free wheel hub or a broken axle. Note that the problem is not necessarily the side you jacked up, could be either.
The slow turning was due to the drag of the oil turning it. My best guess is it is a hub.
