As promised, this is what I found when I pulled the oil filter....

...anyone want to replace there bets as to what it might be??!!!! (other than potential catastrophic engine failure)

For scale - each splodge is about the size of a average thumb print.

can you see the underside of the cylinders? if they arent too bad then Im guessing eithe camshaft or injector pump drive wear.

Today I finally pulled the sump off and i think that i can confirm that the low oil pressure and metal shards is due to the fact the oil pump has **** itself. I found many alloy fragments all looking very much like pump idler gears....mystery solved!

James I would have thought that the oil pump gears would be steel, if you found alloy chunks I would be looking further, Regards Frank.

OK, i think that you may be right - i just dissassembled the oil pump - and checked the gears - all intact and all within manufactures tolerance for end float - damn.

have checked the bottom of the pistons, they are all intact. nothing looks amiss at the bottom end.....

    .....hmmmm

Have you removed the timing cover and checked in that area, Regards Frank.
