...anyone want to replace there bets as to what it might be??!!!! (other than potential catastrophic engine failure)
For scale - each splodge is about the size of a average thumb print.

can you see the underside of the cylinders? if they arent too bad then Im guessing eithe camshaft or injector pump drive wear.

Today I finally pulled the sump off and i think that i can confirm that the low oil pressure and metal shards is due to the fact the oil pump has **** itself. I found many alloy fragments all looking very much like pump idler gears....mystery solved!
OK, i think that you may be right - i just dissassembled the oil pump - and checked the gears - all intact and all within manufactures tolerance for end float - damn.
have checked the bottom of the pistons, they are all intact. nothing looks amiss at the bottom end.....
