    LWB diffs in a SWB

Hi all, I have a spare front and rear diff from a S3 LWB 6cyl and I'm thinking about fitting them to my S3 SWB 4cyl. Is there any problems doing this or is it a straight swap? Be great to have 24 spline axles front and back.

Front is a straight swap. However they are still 10-spline at the diff so you don't really gain anything. You can just swap the halfshafts and drive flanges and you will end up with the same result.

I assume the rear is a sals. That is a bit more involved. The spring perch spacing on a SWB are narrower than a lwb. So you need to weld new mounts on the LWB axle. You also need to shorten the prop - A lot!

IMHO on a SWB, the toy centre conversion is the best option, but it is expensive if you can't do the work yourself.

Oh, thanks for the reply, a little more involved than I thought and probably not worth the effort. If I do have problems later I'll look at doing the rear "Toy"? conversion.

"Toy"? = Toyota diff centres. Hilux from memory. They are adaptable to the Rover axle housings.

Exactly. Mercedesrover did a great writeup on pirate of the conversion he did to his series. Can't find it, but here are some pics:

Thanks, but the transport would be too much. I'm now looking into getting a bolt lock conversion for the rover diff. This would retain the ground clearance and will give it more strength.
