6cyl engine, any good? Whats it worth?

    Hey all,

I found an old Landy at the wreckers today, its got the 6cyl engine in it.
I suspect I could get it for very cheap, probably needs a rebuild however.

    Are those engines any good?
Is it worth picking it up just because I can?

    Cheers,
    Ash

    depends on your perspective.

for the extra fuel consumption compared to the 2.25 4 pot the extra power isnt worth it.

if you're not right on top of maintenance the engine eats its exhaust valves.

the vehicle if fitted with a rover 6 is a good canditade to drop a holden 6 into.

if originality and overall power is more what your interested in then the motors a little better than the 4 pot

I used to own a 6 cyl series III - the one you describe could have a variety of uses depending on what you want to do. (And what you already have).

All things considered, the 6 is 'fair', although I personally prefer a 2.25 4cyl.

If you are considering it for parts, the 6 cyl engine is a boat anchor. The bellhousing and engine adaptor are a smidge different, the gearbox is the same (Once you take the adaptor plates off it), and the engine mounts are in a different spot to a 4 cyl, but the rest is usable.

I found the 6 to be temperamental with it's side valves and single rocker rod arrangement - you'd burn #1 exhaust valve if you didn't adjust the mixture a little rich, and the rocker assembly tended to wear and loose oil pressure ( Said rocker assembly was incredibly hard to procure at the time)

Perhaps worth a bottle or two of scotch.....

I totally agree with all the above. They were nothing but trouble if not well tuned. I recently watched a S11A 109 Tray back get sold at a clearing sale. Was straight, original and had a burnt valve. Went for $250. I should have grabbed it The six will pull a stump out at idle.
For some reason the 3ltr six out of a Rover car (Are possible to fit in) were a lot more reliable. May be hard to find now though. Awesome engine to drive.

If you want it to restore for its charm go for it. For a daily drive may not be ideal.
I'd like a six to play with as have so much charm compared to the much more refined and robust 2.25 four.

Personally I don't like Holden sixes in landys Although the smaller ones did work OK on near flat ground. Not the 202

the other option is that the restorers of series 3 army land rovers often want them as they re hard to come by at times.
