    Removing gearbox & t-case - Easiest way?

    Hey all

Ive scored a cheap gearbox and transfer case out of a Series 3, they are still currently fitted to the vehicle.

Whats the easiest was to drop them out?

Can they be lifted by (strong) hands or will I need a hoist?

    Cheers
    Ash

Hoist - out the passenger door.

You could lift them I suppose but its an awkward spot and you'll probably do your back...

hoist arm in the passenger door, then chains through gearshift hole and around gbox/tcase

    lower them both together

It is fairly easy to split the T/C and gearbox, albeit a bit messy - you have to take the bottom cover plate off the T/C to get at about three nuts inside. The two bits are a lot more easily handled.

seperating them will let you get them out with out removing the seat box.
If you have the removable intermediate support member (under the tcase/gearbox) then you can drop it out in one piece and slide it out from under the vehicle

remove the passanger door, all the floor plating, the seats, the seat box(omit if you are seperating or have the removable member) and the panel over the bell housing that attaches to the flare on the firewall.

remove the shafts, levers, linkages and the clutch slave.

unfix the mounts from the gearbox to the chassis and lift it slightly(a jack from underneath for this is fine)

place a piece of timber under the flywheel cross member and remove the mounts . the piece of timber should be about 19mm thick 40mm wide and just long enough to rest on the back of the sump and come about 30mm back from the lip of the bell housing.

support the gearbox on a stand if you are removing the tcase or by slinging the lot if you are removing it in one shot. sling it more towards the back of the box so the timber takes the weight of the nose

remove all the bolts on the bell housing and then insert at about the 2+10 position a pair of guide rods (100mm long bolts are fine) and slide the box backwards when the lip of the bell housing is about to slide off of the timber support the bell housing readjust the slings for a good lift. Remove the guide studs if they dont come out by easy finger pressure resling the box.

when you goto put it back in sit the bell housing on the bit of timber, support the tcase (or back of the box) and then reinstall the guide dowels, move the sling a bit further back and mate it all up.

If you cant easily slide the box up to full mating of the bell housing then you need to either adjust the alignment of the friction plate or the angles of the box.

    Best of luck.
