yep, once they are out strip em rebuild em and put new seals in em.
costs about $200 for all the bearings and seals to do both.
you dont even need any super specialist equipment to do it.
Hey all
I have noticed my gearbox and transfer box both weep a bit of oil, nothing too major but the level do drop fairly quickly.
I had thought of taking them both out to do all the gaskets and seals, hopefully stop the leaks.
Everything operates fine aside from the leaks, 2nd gear popping out when descending in low range and a pretty loose reverse/first gate.
Is this possible without stripping them completely apart?
Is it possible to even have oil tight boxes on this vehicle?
What else would you recommend doing while I have it all out?
Cheers,
Ash

No worries, ive emailed Gary Gjerde to ask for a price.
What about the popping 2nd gear?
Someone said it was a synchro issue, should I do this while im in there?
Also, ive been getting a small amount of clutch judder when cold.
I don't know if this is normal.
I may as well do that while im in there?
As a general rule, do the clutch, (or at least disassemble and have a good look at it) whenever you have the gearbox out of anything.
It is possible that the clutch judder has little to do with the clutch - you can get that effect with soft or loose engine/gearbox mounts, and also with a dragging handbrake.

Hmmm I cant speak for the previous owner (s) but im mechanically sympathetic, certainly hasn't had any abuse by my hand.
Ill probably post up some pics of the internals once its out and apart anyway, be good if you guys could cast an expert eye over them.
Cheers
OK ive been quoted on rebuild kits, $350 for gearbox and $250 for transfer case.
Everything needed bar the gears and shafts.
Its more than I wanted to spend but sounds OK considering the amount of stuff you likely get, what do you think?
thats not bad value but shopping around and buying the bearings at pro bearing shops can get them cheaper.
