    Grease appearing around freewheel hub...

    Hey all

Ive got the "Selectro" hubs on my S3.

Ive noticed today that there is grease coming out from around the rotating
part of the hub and getting centrifugally sprayed onto the tyre...

Its only a small amount at the moment but I suspect it will get worse.

    What is the likely cause?
    Axle seal?

    Cheers
    Ash

if its on the outside of the wheel its the freewheeler to hub gasket or an internal seal of the hub failed.

If its on the inside then you're in a world of hurt as the grease/oil will be getting onto your brake shoes and drum.

providing its leaking from the point where the selectro bolts onto the hub... (and from memory cause a, I dont have the selectro manual and b, I havent done one in more than 5 years)

remove the retainer for the selector knob, remove the knob, remove the axle bolt undo the selectro body from the drive flange, replace the gasket and it all goes back together in reverse sequence.

loctite or hylomar #3 on the gaskets.

Interesting! These Selectro hubs seem quite different to the ones I have for my 76 SWB. This style look more like the old AVM I think it was hubs where you turn a small section in the end of the hub to engage where mine had a large section (knob) on the end and you basically turn the whole end of the hub. My type I think from memory just have an o ring to seal the end of the hub where the outer rotating section fits over the fixed inner part of the hub. Could be wrong it's been some years since I last pulled them apart.

There's dozens of different varieties that have been sold for use on Landrovers. In the early sixties, I had 'Husky' hubs - they leaked oil from new!

Yeah mine are different to that too, you turn the whole hub on mine.

they all come apart in much the same way, its just finding the retainers and springs that gets interesting.

digital camera, lots of photos with the mind to developing a how to is always a good thing..

    thats what I do.
