Thread: brake drum screws stuck

Corroded to hell.

Sounds like some heat and penetrene is needed. Primus torch get it red hot then let it cool spraying the penetrene on the screw. Then your impact driver again. It may need a couple of attempts.

Don't rush it, remember the grand canyon was made by a trickle of water.

G'day All, I always give the face of the brake drum a whack with a brass hammer, then try to tighten them before attempting to undo the screw.
If all that fails, I use a center punch over near the edge and hit it in a anti-clockwise motion, this generally does the trick, if all of the above fails, puch a mark into the center of the screw slot, and run a small drill through, progressing to 5/16", either it will take the head of the screw off, or the heat generated may help it let go, but remember if you are drilling out the screw, make sure your pilot hole is in the center of the screw or you will get off center and damage the thread in the hub, cheers Dennis
ps the brake screws are 3/8" Whitworth thread,.

Sometimes a flat ended 3/8 inch pin punch and hammer used in the centre of a screw helps loosen it, by deforming it slightly inwards. It also helps reform the slot/cross a bit.

What....give it a man hit. I belted the begeez out of it, Its not going to budge and I broke the tip off the impact driver. gotta be a bit of man cred in that. The slot in the head is intact but has deepened due to the impact driver.

I did the pin punch shock technique without success. its now down to fire or drill. Thanks all for the ideas. Ill give it a go tomorrow. W.
