I dont think there were any major differences between the fours, or probably the sixes for that matter.
I have a Series 2A that i'm building and currently i have a holden 186 engine. I'm looking to go back to the Land Rover petrol 4 cylinder (if not now then in the future). I've seen a series 3 4 cylinder and was wondering what the differences are from the serie 2a engine? I don't have any detail about the year of the engine only that it's series 3.
Anyone able to shed some light?

No important differences. 7:1 and 8:1 compression heads spanned both IIA and III.
The only major change was the 5 main bearing engine, introduced ~1980. However these are rare as the proverbial in AU.

I have got one![]()
The changes in engine during 2a production and during 3 production were both greater than the change from 2a to 3 - there were continuous minor changes throughout. As indicated, the only really significant change was the five bearing engine, but these are almost non-existent in Australia. Apart from this, the major changes would be carburetter going from Solex to Zenith to Weber (but I don't think these are common here either). The only change I can think of that was made at the 2a/3 change was the change from generator to alternator.
In any case, all the four cylinder engines 1958 - 1983 are bolt in replacements for each other (except for the legacy 2l used in 1958 S2 88s). Almost all the changes can be made to an early engine anyway.

The 2a engine is quoted as having 77bhp, where the s3 engine 83bhp. This figure does vary in practice, I knew of a couple of s3 trays years ago, one was flat out at 75kmh and drank petrol like it was going out of fashion, and the other one would do nearly 130kmh and got about 27mpg! These two vehicles were only a couple of days build difference!
Landrove Dave - Having built and designed modern cars (for the blue oval), I can tell that even today you'll still find variation from 2 cars back to back on a production line!!!
Well I have now bought the series 3 engine in question and it will be going into my series 2a to replace the holden engine!!
The engine has been in a shed for 35 years! Still turns cost me $120!! bargin!!!![]()
