The numbers are related to the odometer - (number of revs per mile) The Speedometer can be calibrated seperately (to an extent) by moving the pointer on the shaft - ie: setting the spring tension.

With the stop removed, the pointer needle is meant to point at the white dot.

My Series 3 Lightweight (1974) has 1536 on the speedo , according to OP that means 6.00 x 16 Tyres , but the Handbook states 6.50 x 16 tyres

The speedometer in my SIIa is as accurate as the speedometer in my D1. Reads about 3 miles high at 50mph. I did clean, lubricate and adjust it though, and install a new speedometet cable.
