    Is this a S2A or S3

Looking at getting a new LR project, can anyone confirm if this a 2A as listed or a 3?
Land Rover Series 2A 1970 | Trade Me

Initially I was adamant it was a 3, but after checking the chassis code it comes back as
    Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic or Station wagon
    Wheel base: 88in
    Engine: petrol
    Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)
    18346 Serial number
G Design: Six significant design modifications
Suffix used from April 1969 till October 1971

Now I'm wondering if it is a late 2A (lights in guards) with a 3 grill and dash..
But it also has s3 door hinges?
Another thing I noticed is the 'station wagon' badge on the back, did they carry on into the S3?
Or is this a 'prototype' or 'development' model solihull have flicked on? I've heard that they do flick on the odd models to the far out colonies. ( the worlds oldest s2 is in NZ I believe)

I've also noticed dual fuel tanks, seems odd for a civvy.
Also the heater isnt under the wing as a S3 should be

    Any help much appreciated

    Ben

It has a series 3 dash and front end - so without detail information like numbers etc you would have to say a series 3. If the Chassis number is coming up as a series 2a then has it been rebodied with a series 3 body.

Also if it has its original gearbox and it is all synchro then a series 3 - but then the box can be changed easy enough.

Also my series 3 did not have a heater but I would have expected a station wagon to have one. Also I don't know what those rear seats are - as far as I am aware it was only the series 1 SWB station wagons had individual rear seats - I thought Series 2 and 3 SWB SW all had bench seats in the back.

Also my series 3 had twin tanks so not unusual.

Its a bitza! But if the chassis number says Series 2a, then that is what it is legally. It appears to have a Series 3 bulkhead - but a 2a windscreen, 2a door checks, 2a radiator, 2a hydraulic reservoir, 2a window locks, 2a door locks.

All in all, I would say that it is a 2a that has had the bulkhead replaced with a Series 3 one, including dash (simpler job than grafting the 2a dash onto the Series 3 bulkhead), and also fitted the Series 3 hinges and grille on it.

I think you will find it has a S3 windscreen though - hinges bolt onto the windscreen and fit inside the bit on the bulkhead, not part of the windscreen and outside the bit on the bulkhead.

good picking on the windscreen john, I have also noticed the way the steel frame is folded is different between s2a and s3 but would be too hard to tell in that photo.
