How to I.D. gearbox/No numbers

Hi guys, Just bought series 2A and the gearbox sounds like its going to need a rebuild soon. I'm trying to ID the gear box so I can work out what bits to get.

Neither the box or the transfer case have ID numbers in the usual places.
I think its a series 3 box because it has syncro on all gears and no numbers would seem to mean a series 3 box and a 2/2A transfer case.

I have attached pics of the only numbers I could find on the transfer case.
Cant find anything on the box.
Are there any differences in the internals of series 3 box I need to know when ordering parts?
Is there another way to ID the suffix or number of the box.

Its is bolted up to a Holden 186 if that makes any difference.

All of those are casting numbers, not sure what they would have been used for.

The Number you need is a stamped number and to find it by the looks of it will need to use a bit of elbow grease to clean around the gearbox till you can find and see it.

Yeah the problem is it doesn't have any numbers were the usually are.
If it is a series 3 box mated to a 2A transfer case witch i think it is, it will be missing the 3 box number as they are stamped on the transfer case and the 2A transfer case wont have one because it will be stamped on the original gearbox.
I need to know what suffix the box is for parts???

Well! I gave the same problem of a sorts with boxes and that some of them are missing serial numbers.
But I do know that one of the gear boxes I have is defiantly a series three box and It still has it's serial number.
When I can get away from this computer ( busy helping the wife with sending attachments with her job application at the moment ) , I will go outside and write up what I can find as extra clues that goes with the suffix's on the boxes I have.

One way to work around your dilemma, would be to buy another correct suffix box for your model Land Rover and have it checked out or rebuilt it if it requires that and then replace the noisy box, the Land Rover would only be off the road for the change over.

Thanks, the truck is not currently on the road, so it not a huge deal to pull the gearbox out.
But if I could find one for a good price near me I would prefer to rebuild one that I know what is inside it.

The Series 3 gearbox has the Leyland logo on the RHS + it also has a cast web on the RHS, cheers Dennis

But no lattice/web in the castings of the A suffix SIII boxes and maybe some later ones. These were the ones that threw the reverse idler gear and shaft out the side of the box and the reason why the lattice was introduced on later boxes - all the Au military boxes ? E suffix have the lattice.

Thanks I have been through this before posting.
But it does not tell me how to ID the suffix of the box
with no numbers on it.
I know it's a 3 box and most likely a 2a transfer case.
But I am under the impression that I need to know the suffix
to order parts.

Mine had no ID on my Isuzu C240 powered Series III.
Isuzu C240 powered Series 3 starting about post #44
Seems that the ID was on the transfer and then it moved to the box (or t'other way round) so you can end up with a gearbox and transfer box with no number.

I'm fortunate that I can personally visit the parts supplier with the part I want in my hand.

Mine was a late box (ribbed casing) but earlier transfer box (small intermediate shaft).

Seems one item to check is the reverse ratio.

I'm sure most parts supplier will provide some clues to help you identify which box you have.
