Thread: 3/4 gear synchro orientation

    3/4 gear synchro orientation

    just a quick one

    I am half way through rebuilding my series gear box, but I have 1 question about the orientation of the 3/4 gear synchro, there is a flat face to the gear teeth on one end and other end the gear teeth are recessed back a few mm, which end faces the front (bell housing end)?

    cant seem to find a clear picture on the net, and the manual doesn't really mention it

    is the third the bell housing end or drive shaft end?

    sorry for being a new noob but I need to get this right, I cant afford to **** this up, and Ive had other guys say the other way round, and ive seen posts and pics from other forums having them both ways...., i just need a clear direction of which way it goes..

    and I know Its my fault for not taking care when removing the shafts and keeping the gears and synchro in place at all times when they were out of the box, but I had a 'shirt' of a time putting the layshaft back in the box with the main shaft in place, so had to strip the gears from the shafts to put them in place and placed the gears in place after, the only part I didnt take notice of was the 3/4 synchro (didnt notice the difference until it was to late)

    I have NO idea sorry but whenever I'm doing work like that I have the trusty old camera right next to me - I take lots of photos of stuff as I take it apart. That way I can refer back to them during assembly.

    Third gear is towards the rear of the vehicle.

    yea I worked it out after I thought about it, a bit of a daft question really, just had to think....

    and Ive got it in backwards at least ive still got the box on the bench separated from the transfer case... I have a little problem getting the selector shaft for 3rd/4th to go fully back, this when I thought I might have a problem...

    If they're installed the wrong way it will try to jump out of gear on the overrun. I had to rebuild my gearbox a second time after this happened to me.

    yea reopened the box flipped the synchro around and put it all back together and it seems to go into 3/4 fully so looks better, but **** me I snapped the last stud on the clutch fork cover while re installing

    got the stud out, but now im buggered, I was going to get the box back in this weekend and get my first ever drive of the old girl in 2yrs ......

    need a few beers now to calm down and think what to do next, now I wish I bought that set of witworth tread dies last week, I could have repaired or made a new stud .... might have to try to weld the stud back together.....

    but then after walking away and a beer or 2 , Im thinking I can flip the stud around and keeping the witworth thread in the box and cut a new metric thread in the broken end of the stud, as long ans the whole stud is long enough

    I did notice this when I first put the box together, I put it in third and rotated the drive shaft by hand a few times and the 3rd gear selector did jump, though very slightly, so that's what made me think things weren't right

    woot gearbox is back in ... I did have a correct size die in all my bits in the shed, I cut new a thread on the stud and had enough length to screw the nut on

    and man it was alot easier to install with the gearbox seperated from the transfer case, a one man job.. though next time I will get a engine hoist and feed it in through the cab, and not from underneath by hand and brute strength, getting to old for that

    just need to connect up drive shafts and give it a drive finally
