what would you do? noisy reverse gear after rebuild
hi guys
I have just rebuilt a 2a gearbox out of my landy, it lost reverse gear.. i pulled it apart and found the rear lay shaft bearing had fallen apart, I replaced this, checked all other bearings and all were OK, I also checked over the gears and there was some small wear marks on the reverse gear and on the lay shaft end gear.. I was under time and money restraints so went ahead and put the box back together..
now I got the box back in, and gave it a test run to night with no tail shafts installed. After a small wiring fire (bloody previous owner and his dodgy wiring) I tested it, all forward gears are fine and quiet, but reverse sounds horrid, a constant grinding....
Is there something Ive screwed up or has the wear on the gear (which didnt look overly bad) caused the problem?
now to my question, this landy is not going around australia, it will only be used only for farm/yard work and short drives to town (10km) to pick up bits and pieces........would you guys pull out the box (again) and replace the reverse gear or just use it as it is and see how it goes?
Matt
