Removing windscreen/window seal adhesive on series vehicle

After pulling out the windscreen/side windows and the old seal, I have considerable amount of sealant in the window channel and all around the perimeter of the glass. The stuff is black and varies in consistency anywhere between soft rubber and cement.

What's the best way to get it off? I am more after chemical solution, rather than plastic knife or steel wool. Also, I am bit reluctant to use ammonia/petrol due unsure on the outcome. So in hindsight something that works on both window channel and glass without damaging letters printed on the glass.

Also, this leads me to believe that both windscreen were replaced at some point, As i can't imagine factories using sealant (unless someone can verify this) in 1960 Series vehicle.

Now you've exposed the sealant to air it might harden.
If not you'll have to find a solvent that dissolves it. Try mineral turps, metho and then acetone.
I'm not sure whether the number on the screen is etched on, if it is, the chemical would have to damage glass to cause problems.

When it comes to a roadworthy you will probably be up for new windscreen glass anyway. Even minor sandblasting can cause a fail.

I'm about to ship windscreen glass in from the UK because it's relatively cheap, even including freight.

Thanks for suggestion Colin and John. Brought some mineral turpentine, will try tomorrow.

Colin, windscreen looks ok to naked eyes, as i can't see any visible sign's of chips/scrub marks etc. i'll try and see if this comes good otherwise, i might have to stick your option.

I'm up to about $1K already so adding anything else will attract GST.

I need glass too is importing in the best option? Broke both the other day after hitting a branch in a storm. Is it best or the only option to pull the roof off and remove the windscreen frame as well?

The windscreens in a Series Land Rover can be replaced with the roof and windscreen frame in-situ. Tools required small blade screwdriver and a container to keep the screws together, a paint scraper (good solid metal type) use this to remove most of any sealant that may be there, a good supply of newspaper to wipe the excess sealer onto and a little bit of elbow grease. The surface areas of the frame will clean up with either petrol or Mineral Turps/thinners, you will need to replace the glazing strip. I just buy insertion rubber from 'Clark rubber' approx. 50mm wide x ?2mm thick (I think that's how thick it is, certainly no thicker than 2mm), it fits in between the alloy strips and the glass to maintain pressure on the glass against the sealer against the windscreen frame, here is a image (yes I know it's showing this job being done with the frame out of the vehicle, but this vehicle was undergoing a complete rebuild at the time)

What you need to do is apply the sealer to the windscreen frame, offer up the glass, fit one of the side alloy strips with a couple of screws then do the opposite side the same, measure the glazing strip along the bottom edge cut it off your roll, fit as shown in the image, do up the screws, use a Stanley knife to remove the excess of the rubber, then using that same piece of rubber fit the top alloy strip and do the same, then do the sides the same, so easy, cheers Dennis
ps it does help just to have an extra pair of hands to hold the glass while fitting the first of the strips to either side of the frame,,.
pps I forgot to mention that you need to keep an eye open for the small rubber blocks that the screen sits on along the bottom edge of the glass, they need to be refitted/replaced,,.

Hey mate just thought I'd let you know windsreens O'brians will fit both sides for $398 but you have to take it in to the shop. They won't do it on the field.
