    Wandering 88

My little s3 88 tends to wander on roads with Bridgestone radial tyres but not as much with rag tyres. Is this normal or does the steering need adjustment for radial tyres?Steering is all new swivel, hubs / wheel bearings are good.

I asked a similar question here but didn't really get a satisfactory answer.

    Toe in with Radials

My experience is that changing to radials improved stability on the road, although the difference was slight. No changes to alignment are indicated.

However, a Series Landrover should not wander significantly regardless of the tyre type.

There should be no more than about an inch play on the rim of the steering wheel. If there is, get someone to wiggle the wheel while you look for where the play is. There are six tie rod ends, plus, of course the steering box and top and bottom arms on the relay and the relay itself. In addition check that neither the steering box nor relay is moving at all when the wheel is wiggled.

Other items that will cause wandering are anything that allows the front or back axles to swivel even slightly, This will include spring bushes, broken spring leaves, loose U-bolts. Badly sagged front springs or fitting One Ton shackles to the front springs without extending the front spring hanger will cause this sort of problem as well.

Free play can also result from failure to properly install the special fitted stud on the steering arm on each swivel housing, as will worn top swivel bushes, or loose wheel bearings.

Any tendency to wander will be exacerbated by increase wheel offset or wider tyres.

    Hope this helps,

    John

    Thanks John
Must be the tyres they are reasonably wide.On a good smooth road they are good it's mostly uneven roads. All so driving the Disco most of the time one gets used to a more modern vehicle. Both have the same tyres fitted.Need to drive the old one more.
