Fuel Gauge Sender

Played with Berts sender.
Took it out and the arm was seized.
Undid the three tangs, pulled it apart, cleaned it all including contact cleaner on contacts.
It was like looking at piano strings, different lengths, with an sprung arm moving over them. Bent the sprung arm, for better contact.
So anyone tell me how it works ????
Resistance to earth, better the earth the higher the fuel needle goes ????
Anyway all fitted and the fuel gauge works, looking at the tank level through the hole and the needle at 3/4 I would imagine it would be about right.
The needle jurked a bit, first few times up and down.
But after a few on and offs of the key it moved smoother.
Not hard to pull apart and clean.

That is pretty much how it works, but be aware there are two distinct types fitted to Series Landrovers, changing in 1967 - and gauges and senders are not interchangeable.

The later type needs the voltage supplied via a voltage stabiliser, mounted on the firewall on Series 2a and the back of the speedo on Series 3, also used by the temperature gauge (none fitted before 1967). This stabiliser, if original type, provides 10v average by switching on and off, which does not affect the slow response of the gauge, which also averages out fuel slopping round in tank. Some aftermarket stabilisers give a constant 10v.
