    Series output seals

    Morning all,

I think this is my first post, if not its my first in years having sold my Puma and acquired an S3. I'm slowly fixing the standard list of oil leaks to get it over the pits and registered in WA. There seems to be heaps of info out there on rear transfer case oil seals but not a lot on the front, which is where I have an issue.

Took the front prop shaft of and the output flange dumped about 250ml of oil. It then had a constant leak around the washer and lock nut. When I removed the flange, the nut was only finger tight, behind it was a sodden felt seal.

I'm going to put it all back with a new gasket and output seal but any thoughts there on the felt seal? it's on the rear output but none of the LR diagrams indicate inserting one in the front output. That being said maybe it was put in there by a previous owner to try and stem the flow of oil around the lock nut.

Anyone got any thoughts or experience of this one, I'd appreciate a bit of guidance!

The felt seal is supposed to be there. Fitted with the rubber facing outwards. It also helps to put some silastic on the splines of the flange to assist in sealing it. Make sure the nut is tight.

Thanks Rod, that makes a heap of sense, the oil was pouring out! Seals turn up today so let you know how we go

    Cheers

Check the seal serface on the flange , if it has a grove in it , fit a speedy sleve. They can be bought from berring companys . I fitted sleves to 2 out of the 3 flanges of my S1 gearbox/ transfer case 27 years & the one i did not do is leaking. I use Locktite hydraulic sealer on the splines & under the washer & torque the nut. I have never seen a felt seal on the out put shaft & there is none shown in my parts book.
I would say it was leaking because the nut was only finger tight.

    G'day,

Also check the Transfer Case breather is not blocked.

What is happening with the flange leaking oil up the spline is not normal.

If the flange nut has been loose for a while the splines could be worn allowing the oil through or if there is the slights in & out movement the flange can act as a pump . . I would just put some sealer on the splines & under the washer & replace the flange seal & tighten the nut . The nut should be tight & not finger tight. And as Chris said check the breather

And make sure the transfer case is not overfilled.

    Leak

    Thanks for all your replies,

I'll check off on all of those and get some locktite for the flange, if the splines aren't worn. The sleves a of the flange are fine, (famous last words) and I've checked the breathers. Never thought of hydraulics pump action if the nut is a bit loose. Thinking on I suppose it's possible it was tight but the felt seal has become work and crushed resulting in it getting loose.

It's the next job on the list, starting Monday, after a trip to Covs for some loctite!

    Cheers Ian
