    Steering Dampner

I have to cut the bracket from the chassis.
Looks like a bolt on extra ( two hole ) but was welded in place.
Any advantage/disadvantage of having one ????
    Thanks

Steering dampers became an option about the time that Series 2 appeared, and were only ever an option, although they seem to have been fitted to all Australian assembled Series 3. The early fitting used the bolt-on bracket you appear to have, with the other end to a bracket that was clamped and pinned to the drag link. By late Series 2a a bracket had been added to all chassis and a special drag link appeared with the attachment point already there (but I think this remained optional, at least for a while.

According to Rover, the damper is only needed to prevent violent kicking of the steering wheel when driving in extreme offroad locations. It is not required to prevent shimmy, which is damped by the friction damping in the swivels and particularly the steering relay.
