    Land Rover Tools

Just wondering what tools have you added to the toolbox, and are a must, for making work on Series Land Rovers, easier.
The common general tools, including, whitworth, imperial and metric spanners, and sockets, good set of screwdrivers, including couple to remove the small jets in the Zenith Carby, pipe spanners for brake pipes and fittings, multimeter, timing light, vacuum gauge etc.
some of the 'special' ones are,Hub socket, mainshaft nut socket.
Any others you think are a must. See an extension bar and socket for the propshaft flange nuts.
    Thanks.

Series 1 Landrovers are (or were when new) all BSW/BSF/BA, but by now many will have a lot of AF spanner size replacements and possibly a few metric. Series 2 started the conversion to UNF, but still have a lot of BS spanner sizes, so you need both AF and BSW spanner sizes. Metric sizes started with Series 3 (although 27mm wheel nuts came on the last of the Series 2a), mainly later ones, but right up to the end of Series 3 production, you still occasionally need BSW spanners, and certainly AF sizes. Hub nut size remains the same, and this is the only special tool that most owners will need, although there are others such as the one needed for the nut on the back of the gearbox main shaft. Flare nut spanners (AF or BSW) are almost essential for any brake pipe work.

Ring/Open spanners in the usual size range are all you really need, but note that for many jobs you need two spanners the same size, and it is usually handy to have one of these a socket with a ratchet. Ratchet ring spanners are also often handy, but not essential.

An assortment of good quality screwdrivers is necessary, as is a good pair of pliers. A soft face hammer is often needed, as is a regular ball peen hammer and a couple of cold chisels.

    Thanks John.
what liked about the Fergy was the bolt head and nut being different, quite often the next spanner size up, so limited tools were needed, to work on it.
Land Rover should of picked up on this.

Where you really need two is the bolts that hold a lot of the body panels. Most of these are 7/16"AF, which is interchangeable with 3/16"BSW, 1/4"BSF or 11mm - and the head and nut are the same size. Other common sizes are 1/4BSW, 9/16AF, 1/2AF etc.

or, for that use, billy, you could just grab one of these little doozies - a specific 9/16" propshaft flange nut socket - does lots of LRs

We had to make our own hub nut spanners. Not only for LR, but for the Inters as well. Mine weren't very good.
