    Full 88 canvas hood.

    Hi,
Just wondering the best place to get a full canvas hood from.
    Probably an overseas seller ?
See in June Classic Land Rover, I picked up today, Exmoor Trim had 88 Hoop and Hood set special, for 540 pounds. Any Idea on postage ???? Emailed them to see if offer is still current.
    Thanks.

I've just had a canvas made. About $1100 from memory.

That is a good price for canvas and hoodsticks.

    Make do locally

    Hello from Brisbane.

I am fairly sure that the freight on a hood stick kit from the UK will be a genuine deal breaker. Ditto the tilt itself depending on your postage pain threshold.

You may be better off getting the ones you have straightened and/or augmented with locally made bits or from wrecks if you can find them.

Admittedly, the canvas tilts look good but really don't enjoy much longevity - either over there or here. For the relative prices hardtops are probably a better long run deal - certainly will outlive canvas by a fair margin under normal wear and tear conditions.

    Cheers,

    Neil

JD purchased a canvas tilt from OS a while back, so he might be able to give you a price on "shipping" as they like to call it.
Usually it's on a par with purchase price, but a bulky item like hood sticks might mean you will need good renal function,
as you may have to sell a kidney to pay for it.
Just recently I purchased 138 quid's worth in a 15kg package and the best offer on shipping was 100 quid.
It was just short of a month from pick up to delivery which is the slowest I have ever experienced.

Made the same inquiry at the beginning of the year with Kim Johnson at Allwheeltrim UK for a 3/4 tilt on an 88, give or take a few quid the prices and shipping are the same for a full length 88

    1 x 88 3/4 frame kit ------------------------- £233.33
    1 x 88 3/4 sand plain sides ----------------- £195.83

Delivery, due to the size of the box it goes on volumetric weight and not pure weight so the cost will be £285.50

Not forgetting that if the cost of goods and shipping exceed $100) Australian customs will hit you with import duty.

As was said earlier the shipping is a bit of a deal breaker. The tilt actually doesn't cost too much to ship, about 80 quid, but due to the size the 15kg sticks ramp up the cost by 200 quid.

fortunately I'm off to Blighty later the year so I might see if I can sneak the sticks into her hand baggage without her noticing. Then ship the sticks and skip the 20% VAT they get hit with in England.

    All Trim replied over night.
I had a mate, who also had the problem. A local sail maker, restitched for him.
    $710 + VAT, $138
$848 posted (plus any custom fees)
    Hi.
We have been looking at the stitching and on mohair hoods we use a different thread which is supposed to last 15 years so it would be good to see what happens to it over there, now we can make a canvas hood with this thread but we would need to use a thread that swells up on the under side. On the same hand I think you will have the same problem with any hood out your way unless they use this thread. Now the thread cost us £95.00 per cobb and it is a 1/3 rd the size so we would need to change a bit more as we are making a one off hood.
The cost will be £320.00 plus delivery which will be £112.47, there is no VAT on these prices.

    Kind regards

    Kim Johnson

We got our local Canvas maker to do ours. He worked for Starr canvas many years ago (Military Canvas Makers) He has done my 88", 101", camper, friends 107" and a few other sundry items and have had no trouble with any of them.
