on S3s and 110s - same as wheel stud thread
What is the thread size on spare wheel hold down bolts?

Not on the S3 I have. As far as I know, all bonnet spare wheel mounts are threaded for 1/2"BSF. The bolts are specials, with heads to match the wheel nuts so you can use the wheel brace on them. This is 9/16"BSF (1/2"W) for Series 1,2,2a except very late 2a, and 27mm for very late 2a and Series 3.
But of course, there is no guarantee that the mount you have matches your vehicle - or that it has the original type of wheel nuts!

I know that the head size matches the wheel nut size but not sure about the thread. Did it change ?
It's a special bolt with an oversize head and cross drilled for a split-pin.
