Fitting glass to Series door tops
Hello from Sherwood.
I’m in the process of refitting the window glass in the doors and rear panel of my Series 3 truck cab. Largely to touch up some light surface rust under the channels plus replace the channels. Have all the parts.
I pulled them apart a few years ago - not the fastest renovation - and while the reverse procedure is reasonably intuitive there are a few forgotten steps. The manual doesn’t offer a lot of insight to the process either.
Keen to track down someone in Brisbane with a Series 2A or 3 who has a truck cab to have a quick look at to refresh my memory of where a few of the filler and trim strips fit. Preferably in the Western Suburbs, but at this stage I’m not too averse to travelling further.
No doubt there will be one or two in Cooma at Easter, but I hope to get it done sooner than that.
Cheers,
Neil

Fitting glass to Series door tops
Hello again and thanks for the link - I recall seeing it some time ago, but lost the details. Genuinely useful.
Previous to this, the last time I renewed door channels was in about 1980 on a 109" tray-top that we had on the farm. Back then, of-course, I performed the operation in the single day - so, remembering what went where wasn't too hard. Being in my late 20's probably helped as well..........
Usually I can nut these sorts of puzzles out after a while, and would have eventually gotten there with the present project no doubt. Part of the challenge is that the replacement kit came from the UK in a blue bag and is slightly different in a couple of places to what originally came off the truck. This is mainly the case with what I am taking to be the filler strip that blanks out the rest of the channel beyond the fixed pane. I could always re-use the originals but they look a bit crappy.
Doubtless, it will still fit together.
Cheers,
Neil

Not just this job, but the parts book often adds a lot of help to the workshop manual, as the pictures are more complete.

You may have the parts catalogue already, but if not here are the relevant pages.

Hello again.
Yes, I have the official parts catalogue which has been regularly thumbed through for ordering parts. As noted in the quote, it is also often more ‘instructive’ than the repair manual for an overview - both in this instance and generally.
The illustration for the door panels is reasonably good - problem may be more a couple of key bits missing from the blue bagged refurbishment kit - or somewhere in its’ prior life these same bits were removed from the truck and not replaced. Would seem a bit odd, but these mysteries abound in Series Land.
Unless I have been looking in the wrong place the parts catalogue that I have doesn’t actually have an illustration of the rear panel of the truck cab, or the rest of the roof for that matter. The set up of the double sliding glass arrangement has several fillers and spacers that I have been musing over - the station wagon rear side window is a similar set up and is illustrated in the catalogue. So, there’s a possible guide.
Anyway, all will be well in the end. My late father when faced with a challenge often opined that “things that are man-made can nearly always be man-unmade and vice versa”.
If you see an aging chap taking a more than a passing interest in your truck cabs at Cooma there could be a simple reason.
Cheers,
Neil
Hello again and thanks.
As noted in my earlier reply, the lower illustration of the truck cab is missing from the ‘official’ Series 3 parts catalogue that I have, but is shown in the workshop manual albeit in fairly small form. It may well have been in the Series 2/2A catalogue which I no longer hold.
Being a moderately visual animal I had originally been hoping to just take a quick look at one in the flesh.
Cheers,
Neil

I'm about to start restoring a S3 SWB. Where does one obtain a Parts Book from? I have the Work Shop manual.
Regards,
Alan
Alan,
They can be downloaded electronically from the site. They were also freely accessible on the Roverparts (Ballarat) website at one time, but not sure if the new owners have continued to list them.
Hard copies of the official catalogue are also available from various sources - probably the cheapest source is from the Book Depository UK. Prices are usually lower than eBay and the postage is free.
