Defender stuck injector

A friend has a 2.4 Defender 110 which has been retrieved this week and has a holed #3 piston apparently resulting from a stuck open injector.
He has opted to replace the long block, injectors, turbo etc.
He is being told that this is a fairly common problem and that these engines injectors should be changed every 150k km at about $2k per set.
Has anyone else heard this?

yes, its sort of known about the transit engines.. ITs not what I would call common and typically in the cases that have had the injectors stripped and inspected its usually a part of another component (fleck of hard facing for example) thats caused the issue so not technically the fault of the injector they are just the symptom of a failure elsewhere.

BUT its also like the timing belt in a tdi300...

you change it at 80K Km but I know of plenty that have gone further and werent changed and how many KM's were left in the one that you took out?

and at $2k, that would want to include the labour to change the injectors out.

Almost any mechanical part of the fuel system upstream of the injector.

IMHO IIWM, and the issue was caught in time or it was only going to get a new piston and leg into the old engine, OR if any of the old electronics/emission gear (sensors and ECU/ EGR) were going to be reused I'd have the injector inspected, if it was a carbon build up failure then there is a chance that the issue may repeat if the carbon buildup that caused the failure was caused by a "directed" fuelling issue. If it was a metal fleck or internal damage to the injector then things like the pump and control valves and filters need to be looked at if they are to be reused.

I'd also be looking at cannibalizing the old engine for all its other goodies.
