    Firewall Vent Seals

    Hi All,

I can't remember of the rubber seals are glued to the firewall or glued to the vents themselves. I suspect firewall, but I just wanted confirmation on that.

Also, I remember there was a thread a while back about the new seals are too big and suggestions for alternatives, I am finding that too. Unfortunately I can't find that thread, but I interested in recommended substitutes. So far I found some rubber strip at Clark Rubber which I think will do if I glue it to the firewall, it's about 10 x 5 mm.

    Thanks
    John

I have recent frustrating experience with this exact issue. I bought two types of vent rubbers, both (for Series only) are meant to be glued onto the bulkhead recess.

However, BOTH where too thick meaning the top lip of the vent was binding on the rubber and couldnt be shut, basically stuck half way open. The two I have are:
    1) flat faced, fits nicely in the bulkhead groove but too thick and no recess for mating with the vent lip
    2) recessed face, but again too thick and slightly short length wise

I decided to experiment and grind down the 2nd type, took half of the width off. Even with this mod, it still was too thick!

So in the end, I went to a rubber supplier and purchased sqaure section, sticky backed foam. I then stuck this onto the vent lid itself, not the bulkhead. The soft material allows for the bulkhead vent lip to squeeze in creating a seal, BUT this has not been tested in the wet.

I also noticed that there are now places selling vent lid seals (not the County ones) so perhaps this is a broader issue.

Here is a snippet of my vid with the vent seal in place, hard to see with poor lighting but hopefully you get the idea.

    Thanks Carlos.

Do you know the cross section measurements of the foam you used ?

    Cheers,

Ill have to check again, but what I did was take the vent to Clark Rubber and picked the one that fitted the best. I still got a bit left over at home so ill check.

BTW - did you get my PM reply mate, hope that helped!

I stuck mine on the flaps.
Most Auto stores sell stick on foam, different width and thickness.
    You around tomorrow John.

A routine smear of Silicone Grease can help with the closing motion so the seal is not pulled away.
