Rusty steel wheels - when do they become unsafe?

    Hi All

On a previously-owned S3 wagon, the standard steel wheels were a little rusty. I had them sand-blasted, primed and then I painted them. All good. I was happy they were safe.
My question is: how much rust can be tolerated before a steel wheel should be considered unsafe? Let's imagine a field-find vehicle.
Now obviously, anything that has rusted right through is unsafe, but what about before they get that bad?
    Any advice?

    cheers

    Doug

I’ve sand blasted, painted and used wheels with quite severe pock marks inside caused by rust but they still had plenty of meat left everywhere - I guess if you think it looks unsafe, it probably is.
