    Series steering box help

Hi I am after some help from those who have been there before on the steering box output shaft “O” ring seal, which held up after replacing for a while but is now leaking again? There is no play I can see in the shaft and the box has little wear, (vehicle very low mileage and sat in a shed for 30+ years). Is it a common issue? Would one shot grease be an alternative approach? I can try a viton ring otherwise unless I’m missing something, but it’s a bit of a job compared to changing lubricants.
    Cheers

I've replaced several O-rings without further issue.
Don't switch to grease, it'll get displaced and cease to lubricate anything. One shot might be OK but isn't solving the cause of the leak.

Where did you get the O-rings from ?
I get them from an O-ring supplier rather than a Land Rover parts place....cheaper and possibly better quality.
Viton is harder than NBR, that might make the situation worse.

    Orings

Ok thanks for that , maybe I should try again. From memory they came in a blue box. I really only wanted a couple of gaskets and the o ring to stop it leaking, all the other components were fine so I just reassembled with original parts. Quality might be the issue. Nitrile it will be! Will have a look to see if the o ring I installed has started to break down?

Rubber parts in a blue box can be a problem sometimes.
I'm not sure if I have a spare handy (as a sample) as they are only a nominal sum from an O-ring supplier I use.

    Thanks for the advice

I avoid that manufacturer nowadays! Definitely a learning curve, thank you for the offer but I will use a local hydraulics place for a replacement, they should be pretty standard imperial size I hope?

If you get stuck let me know and I'll see if I still have a spare.

The 'blue box' issue varies with different components.
Some parts , you have no choice but to accept a blue box and they are OK. Rubber parts are often problematic.
If you order from overseas it's interesting to see the Country of origin for each part. India followed by China then Italy and I once had a part where the Country of origin was the UK !!

OEM means nothing in a suppliers listing, it won't be the Original Equipment Manufacturer.
OEM quality is another good one, all it means is it 'should' fit. Manufactured to OEM specifications is much the same.
