Correct ignition coil for 2.25 litre petrol motor

That’s pretty much my situation - there are no parts places in Gundagai and the nearest Repco is in Tumut. Unfortunately, the young lady at the counter doesn’t have a clue on finding a 1975 Land Rover in their system which is fairly frustrating. No censure there but their inventory system is based on VINs and number plates and seems to be opaque to any general description of what you’re driving.

She could have been standing on a box of them….

Anyway, today’s a new day and I’ll have another go at resolving that - Wagga is likely my best bet but obviously I can’t get there unless there is a bus or similar. That makes doing it over the phone which adds a layer of challenge.

I'd also suggest converting to electronic:
Land Rover Parts - ELECTRONIC IGNITION CONVERSION KIT - 2.25 4 CYL. (click for further details) 45D

Pretty standard Lucas L19 points, unless it has a bosch dizzy, which I doubt. Coil original part # is PRC9858, which I believe is standard 12 volt, iow non resistor. Condensor is RTC3472. I don't have a cross ref for these, but I'll look.

I too would recommend the electronic, unless you need to keep the old system for purist reasons.

Oh, and a word of caution. US sites often refer to the V8, which is different, such as they used a resistor.

My distributor is a D45.

I do have an electronic ignition conversion set back in Brisbane but my immediate challenge is to get the existing points based setup going to get back there. No one in Gundagai is prepared to look at the truck before Thursday - all flat out.

As a disappointing aside, the coil I picked up at the gathering immediately went hot and it didn’t start anyway. That is a Fuelmiser C80. Repco in Wagga don’t have any GT40 coils in stock but could possibly get one in overnight. The counter guy couldn’t cross reference the Rover numbers for the points or condenser.

Anyone know what they translate into Bosch or Lucas numbers? RTC6627 and RTC6621.

Just been on the Repco website. Hmm, every coil they seem to have is the on plug type, or a "module".

Few other possibilities in Tumut.

Talking to my brother-in-law’s auto electrics contact in Deniliquin the suggestion was that the rapidly heating coil might be the points locked or melted shut. Rather than immediate failure of the coil itself.

I’ll test that later if I can find a lamp. Whatever, I will still probably need to get replacement points and condenser from Wagga or Tumut once I identify the correct serial numbers.
