LWB roof made from a SWB roof ?

While stripping paint from my Dormobile roof I found a very neat weld (picture attached).
There's another, similar weld, 3' 5" further back. No join in the guttering.

I'm guessing a LWB vehicle would have been ordered and shipped to Dormobile for conversion, I can't see them modifying a SWB roof.

Does this mean Land Rover made the LWB roof by extending a SWB roof or is there some other reason.
Having never investigated a LWB roof maybe they were made this way ???

It would not particularly surprise me if Rover had salvaged faulty or damaged parts during production in this way, perhaps using them on bodies that were going to be modified anyway, but I have never heard of it.

Remember that at this time they were constrained by production capacity, and could easily have been under pressure to salvage parts to allow them to push products out the door.

    Hi John,

It was the neat welding that surprised me !
As you mentioned....the roof was going to have a big hole cut into it anyway and the roof cap covers the welds. There were that many coats of paint that the weld only appeared when the paint was stripped off.

Interesting that a red (red oxide ?) paint was applied to the outside & inside of the roof. I guess this was done by Dormobile ?

A colleague in the US has suggested that the weld was standard on a 109" roof, picture attached.

I don't have a LWB roof to investigate but the next time there are a group of Land Rovers I'll be checking !

I must have a look at one of my spares. But not while it is over 40°!

My 88" Series II (1959) has a weld in almost exactly the same spot.

Just had a look at a SWB Tropical roof (not sure if it's from a IIa or III) and a SWB III roof and they both have the weld !

So...... it looks like they've always been made from component parts.
If I wasn't stripping the paint off I'd never have realised.
