    What is a Fairey Overdrive worth?

    Can the Series experts out there advise what is a reasonable price or price range for an operational and complete Fairey Overdrive unit?

    Currently fitted to a series 3 -
    What would the Unit plus a transfer case go for?
    Mounted on a 186 motor?

    New price is US$1535 (see Rovers Down South Fairey Overdrive), so I suppose that is the upper limit. I paid $500 for mine, but it came with a Series 2a lwb attached.

    I would be inclined to pay up to about $500 for a complete, apparently good, second hand one. Even if it works, there is no guarantee that it will not need repairs, and while all parts are readily available, they are expensive.

    In particular, if possible get a look at the drive dog that replaces the output gear on the gearbox. If this is worn, so will the bit it engages with, which is the mainshaft of the overdrive - and this IS expensive.

    The one I have is in the landie and can be test driven - not sure that helps from what you say.

    I see there is a plate on the top (see pic attached) - if I take the plate off will this allow the input gears you mention to be inspected?

    No. The drive dog is inside the mainshaft of the overdrive, and the overdrive needs to be removed to inspect it. It is actually directly below the rusty plate in the centre bottom of the picture, but as I said, it cannot be seen until the overdrive is removed. It also tends to not be very well lubricated, as it is hard for oil to get to it, although it is open to the transfer case oil. The result is that movement on the dog due to slight misalignment results in wear. The dog has a large number of teeth, but they are small and don't stand much wear.

    The two parts you would need to replace are the Mainshaft RTC 7168 and the clutch RTC 7170, bottom two pictures in the RH column. Note the prices, and you will see why checking them is worthwhile!

    Ok thanks John - so best to remove, inspect then know what dealing with.

    I take it unbolt back where attached to transfer case and just slide off?
    What do you put back on/in transfer case? Plate or need gears as well?
    Does removal mean transfer case not work as missing drive gears?

    I guess I can look at Rovers Down South instruction manual to figure this out.

    You can just undo the nuts and slide it off. The only complication is that one of the nuts is in between the flange and the body - loosen as far as you can, slide back, then loosen the rest of the way.

    With the overdrive removed, you need to replace RTC7170 with the gear 218244 and the overdrive itself with the rear mainshaft bearing housing assy. 230696 to make the vehicle driveable.

    Also look inside the front where the needle rollers run. Unless that is smooth it will be noisey.Run your finger round the surface, if you feel indentations corresponding to the needles, its expensive to fix.
