As an "ex-Yank" (of 25 yrs ago) there are a couple of reasons:
    1. US prices exclude any sales tax, GST, etc. That's because these taxes are specific to the suburb (even specific mosquito abatement precinct) that people live in. The Aust GST is included.
    2. There's no so-called "luxury car tax" which we have, and
    3. I suspect that US prices were locked in a yr or so ago, when the Aust $ was worth about US$0.75. LRUS would have "locked in" the exchange rates (as do LRA).

The more normal stuff that more left hand drives are made so bigger base of cars to amortise specific costs, cost of labour (US dealers are known to hire illegals at below-min wage to do a lot of the work), and yes, it is a larger competitive market which drives profits down. Still I'm happier to be here and not be worrying about being

Hell yeah, over here like for an E92 m3 coupe like $170k, and over there they are whinging that they have to pay $52k!!!

I guess its the factors mentioned above + the massively larger market meaning the wholesailers margin is pretty low like the dealer.

Strange as it may seem the humble Commodore reduced the price of the M3 here in the UK. About 5 or 6 years ago they were bring over a few of the 4 door version HSV before the 2 door Vauxhall Monaro arrived. The press loved them and compared to the M3 said it was difficult to justify the £25k price difference. BMW reduced the price of the M3 by £15k soon after due to 'reduced costs'. First time BMW had reduced the list price of a car here.
