						Hey all,
Had this for a bit on the General forum in a thread on Roll cages, but no luck so decided to try here in the Deefer forum.

Hey all,
Having a little trouble chasing down details on roll cages for a Defender 110 wagon. I've found a couple of examples:
Landrover Tuning :: Full External Safety Devices Roll Cage European Version Defender 110 with NAS underwing mounts, 5 Door - Protection Defender - Defender
Land Rover 110 5 Door Station Wagon Roll Cage
I'm looking for information about fitting one to a vehicle registered in NSW - I've searched RTA publications but to no avail. I've read the CAM's specs etc, but just want information about getting it done in NSW (Sydney) for a non-competition vehicle and being assured that it's all legal, above board.
I prefer external for a couple of reasons, but the main one being the added benefit of also being able to fix the roof racks to the cage rather than to the gutter/roof, and fixing lights to the front.
When I asked Bond Roll Bars about it - this is the reply the sent me, in total:
Sorry we don’t do external cages as they don’t work
Regards
and that was it. Exemplary customer service advice presented in a well-reasoned argument clearly supported by relevant facts and evidence. Sheesh.
Does anyone have any real information they could point me to regarding the use of external roll bars on a Defender 110 wagon?
Has anyone fitted an external cage to their deefer that they would recommend?
Has anyone had any experience getting one through rego in NSW?
Cheers,
Duke

That SD one at least seems to have a hoop inside aswell, although it has no diagnols atall which imo makes it not really that great.
I have a twin diagnol hoop inside with rear stays and then an external section over the roof and screen. All legs go to the chassis
That is engineered in Qld. I believe that in NSW a true 6point cage is not legal. (internal anyway due I think to footwell egress)
heres a few pictures, dont know if they give you any ideas:

that looks pretty good,i saw some roll cages for them before(internal ones) and they were 5k
One thing I will say with external cages is that imo if you are going to get one made, try and get it made quite tightly to the body work. Too many people space them out what seems like about a foot and I think it looks dreadful. Almost like they couldn't be bothered to put any effort in.

Thanks Pete, for taking the time to respond. Appreciated.
A 6-point internal welded rollcage is apparently legal in NSW if the head-clearance is sufficient - I've had a couple of quotes to get one done, including engineering and RTA approval, but the cost is horrendous.
But my preference is for an external cage.
I do agree with the clearance thing - it looks ridiculous in my opinion to have the cage sticking out from the bodywork too far...
Cheers.

I heard that you could get a strong external 'ladder rack' made up...
isuzutoo-eh,
Mate, still looking for a cargo barrier? I'll have one going spare if I can solve my roll cage issues - let me know if your interested.
If anyone knows anything about mounting an internal roll cage to a 5dr defender let me know that too. I have a guy who an make one up but we're both a bit lost with the best places to fix it to.
mools.
I think there is/was a bloke on Ebay selling external kits for Def. If my memory is correct he was located in Newcastle. He had a lot of LR parts modifications so he shouldn't be hard to find.
I think the kit price unfitted was about $3,500

When we have fitted them to Patrols the usual is to weld plates to the floor and then bold the cage to that to make it removable. I am fairly sure you cannot have a cross brace between the front and rear occupants but a vertical bar up the b pillar is legal. Often people have a bolt in cross brace, although not as strong it can be removed if you have passengers in the back.
