Air intake is through the side of driver's side guard.

I have heard that the various components of the intake system are not well sealed. As I have a snorkel mine was replaced with a flexible hose from the snorkel where it meets the guard through to the filter box.

what type of snorkel do you have? How did you do this exactly?
I have a mantec snorkel and you are right it is not sealing. I took the mushroom head and stuck my hand over the top and it is sucking in al lot of air from the standard ducting to the airbox. I even slickaflexed the snorkel join onto the front guard!!! There is a slip on hose fitting onto the inner of the front guard that seems to not be a complete seal......
Tomo,
Mine is a Safari Snorkel. It is the Td5 version modified by the installer to suit the Puma set up. (the Safari version for the Puma had just been released at the time). He dispensed with the existing pipework and replaced it with a flexible tube part of which can just be seen in this photo towards the bottom:
The installer is also an experienced Defender owner and is not averse to taking his to places where the risk of water ingress is real so I have some confidence that he has done the right thing sealing it adequately at either end. He also sealed up the relief valve in the bottom of the air box.
